Laboratory Assistant

The Laboratory Assistant provides efficient, accurate, and courteous service for physicians, employees and patients. The Laboratory Assistant conducts blood draws and specimen collection while assisting the laboratory and other departments in ensuring order accuracy and specimen integrity along with receipt of specimens, while maintaining a sterile work environment in accordance with Providence philosophy, objectives, policies, procedures and standards. The Laboratory Assistant is responsible accurately enters data into hospital and laboratory computer systems related to patient billing and charting. Fosters change and teamwork to ensure constructive relationships and growth, while maintaining a positive and professional image when interacting with patients, their families, physicians, employees and general public.


Required qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED

  • 1 year experience in a laboratory or a like setting and/or Lab Assistant certification

  • Lab Assistant certification required from ASCP, NCCT, AMT, or other comparable certification such as from the military, Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), or Mobil Intensive Care Paramedic (MICP)

  • BLS or the ability to obtain certification within 90 days of date of hire required.

  • Alaska driver’s license with clean driving record and proof of current vehicle insurance required.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Additional education in science, medical coursework, or laboratory training

About Kodiak Island Medical Center

Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center (PKIMC) provides comprehensive health care to residents and visitors of Kodiak Island. This critical access hospital features 25 acute care beds, including four birthing suites, one OB triage room, and two ICU beds. In addition, the Elder House, PKIMC’s long term care facility, has 22 beds.

PKIMC provides an extensive array of inpatient and outpatient services, including emergency department, surgery, laboratory services, maternity, general medicine, physical therapy, occupational therapy, respiratory therapy, sleep studies, specialty clinics, diagnostic imaging services and pharmacy and is staffed by a mix of primary care physicians, surgeons and specialists who provide family practice, internal medicine, obstetrics, radiology and general practice.
